Character First!

Character First! is a program that promotes character development in individuals from all walks of life.  The mission of the Character First! is to encourage true success in businesses, schools, families, communities, and other organizations.

Character First! Education furnishes tools necessary to weave positive character into every aspect of your student's academic program. The other two components, Character First! Business and International Association of Character Cities, enable businesses and communities to reinforce positive character development in their employees and citizens.

Gilchrist County schools are in their second year of implementation, with plans to have the program fully implemented in all schools by 2006.  Each month a single character trait is identified and discussed.  Students study famous people who demonstrated the trait during their lives.  Students and employees who exemplify the specific character trait are recognized.  The entire program incorporates 45 different character qualities.  Gilchrist County's schedule is listed below:

October 2007 Thoroughness Knowing what factors will diminish the effectiveness of my work or word, if neglected.
November 2007 Determination Purposing to accomplish right goals at the right time, regardless of the opposition.
December 2007 Thriftiness Allowing myself and others to spend Only what is necesary.
January 2008 Availability Making my own schedule and priorities secondary to the wishes of those I serve.
February 2008 Deference Limiting my freedom so I do not offend the tests of those around me.
March 2008 Compassion Investing whatever is necessary to heal the hurts of others.
April 2008 Persuasiveness Guiding vital truths around another's mental roadblocks.
May 2008 Wisdom Making practical applications of truth in daily decision.
June 2008 Provider A resourceful person, who is prudent and thrifty, constantly ensuring the best use of all available resources.
July 2008 Visionary One who is committed to growth, looks beyond problems to causes, and develops precise solutions for success.
